Technology should help communities, not harm them.
At Dream.Org, we believe in the power of innovation to drive positive change. From our Justice Innovation Prize, to our Dream Entrepreneurs Network, to our advocacy intelligence project with fiftyoneAI — we know that AI has the potential to improve lives, but only if it’s developed responsibly.
In places like Northern Virginia, Central and Western Texas, Phoenix, and Memphis, AI data centers are being powered by toxic fossil fuels that worsen poor health conditions, like high asthma and cancer rates, and increase energy costs in historically overburdened communities.
As our partner and leader of Memphis Community Against Pollution, KeShaun Pearson told CNN, “If the innovation shackles you to fossil fuels like methane gas or coal, that’s regression, right? That’s not progress.”
AI development is on track to consume enough energy to power 56 million homes by 2030, create major workforce disruptions including a 10-20% unemployment rate, and contribute to the rapid spread of misinformation and distrust of America’s public institutions. We must choose a better, more sustainable path forward.
We’re calling on policymakers, innovators, corporations, and community leaders to commit to:
- Transparent AI deployment
- Workforce transition support
- Community health and environmental protections
Let’s build a future where innovation helps all communities and harms none.
Sign our Green the Grid pledge to stand for healthy innovation and community-first AI development in America.
