Urge Congress to Protect our Wetlands
Incredible fact:
We lose 60,000 acres of wetlands in the United States annually — it must stop
Alarming News:
The recent Supreme Court ruling in Sackett v. EPA has stripped Clean Water Act protections from any waterway not "adjacent to" larger bodies of water, putting millions of acres of our rapidly declining wetlands at risk.
Congress must act swiftly to right this wrong and halt the rapid decline of these ecologically vital swamps, mangrove forests, estuaries, and other wetlands.
Why is time of the essence?
Wetlands — the vibrant heart of our planet's biodiversity — are key in fighting the climate crisis and mitigating its impacts. Wetlands absorb and store vast amounts of carbon keeping it from reaching and further destroying the ozone layer. That also means that when they are disturbed or experience warming, they can quickly become a carbon bomb — releasing greenhouse gasses that would accelerate climate change. Our wetlands also help filter pollution, giving us cleaner air and water, and acting as a natural buffer against flooding. The Supreme Court ruling undermines these invaluable services at a time when we need them most.
Since its founding, the United States has lost over half of its wetlands. Now, thanks to the Supreme Court, the protection of millions of acres of wetlands is at stake. We cannot afford to lose any more ground in the battle against wetland loss.
There isn’t time to waste — urge Congress to take action now!
