Senate: Pass the EQUAL Act Now!

We are at a crucial step towards ending the racist War on Drugs that disproportionately places Black and Brown people in prison for decades. The "Eliminating a Quantifiably Unjust Application of the Law" (EQUAL) Act would create 1:1 penalties for crack and powder cocaine, ending the unjust disparity, bringing thousands home from prison and shortening future sentences.

Crack cocaine and powder cocaine are two forms of the same drug, yet under federal law, we do not impose the same harsh penalties for each. It takes 18 grams of powder cocaine to equal the same punishment you’d get for one gram of crack cocaine.

If we don’t get the Senate to pass the EQUAL Act before New Year’s Eve, we will have to start over again next year and thousands of people will remain unjustly imprisoned.

I am urging you to tell Leader Schumer that we must pass the "Eliminating a Quantifiably Unjust Application of the Law" (EQUAL) Act by whatever means possible.

The EQUAL Act would create 1:1 penalties for crack and powder cocaine, bringing thousands home from prison and shortening future sentences.

With bipartisan support, including 11 Republican co-sponsors in the Senate, this is our best opportunity to eliminate this vestige of the war on drugs that has devastated countless lives of Americans.

This is an opportunity we cannot miss to end this racist law that has disproportionately impacted Black and Brown communities.
