Say “NO!” to the Safer Kentucky Act!

The proposed Safer Kentucky Act threaten to worsen Kentucky’s overdose crisis, increase homelessness, and deepen hardships for those already struggling. Act now to tell your Governor to veto the KY Safer Act.

Increasing sentencing lengths, limiting bail assistance, and criminalizing homelessness and poverty. This is the buffet of bad ideas that the Kentucky legislature wants to enact, but they are not the solutions to addiction and crime that the state really needs. They are not the way to make a safer Kentucky.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what we will get with KY House Bill 5, aka the “Safer” Kentucky Act. Instead of proposing evidence-based programs scientifically proven to reduce crime, like expanding mental health treatment, addiction interventions, or investing in communities, all we get are increased punishments and incarceration rates. Do you know what that'll do for Kentucky?

  • Increase overcrowding in our already packed  and understaffed prisons
  • Endanger correctional staff and incarcerated people due to a strained system
  • Reform bail so only the wealthy can afford it
  • Raise the taxes for all Kentuckians

So, in other words, we have to pay for a bill that will exacerbate problems in our criminal legal system while destroying the lives of many Kentuckians — are you kidding me? Why don’t we instead use our taxpayer money to fund programs that will actually make Kentucky safer?

KY House Bill 5, regrettably, has already passed the House and Senate; it’s time to turn our anger into action and fight back with everything we've got! Join us in advocating for real solutions to reducing crime by saying “NO!” to the Safer Kentucky Act.

    Dear Governor Andy Beshear,

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the implications of the "Safer Kentucky Act" (House Bill 5). This bill, while aiming to improve public safety, will unintentionally harm our communities and exacerbate existing challenges in our criminal justice system.

    Key concerns include:

    • Inefficient Use of Resources: The bill proposes longer sentencing schemes, which are an inefficient allocation of Kentucky's limited resources. Funds could be more effectively used in community investments, mental health treatment, and addiction interventions.
    • Increased Costs with No Safety Benefit: The proposed measures will significantly increase state expenses without demonstrably enhancing public safety, as evidenced by decades of research showing that the length of sentence does not effectively deter crime.
    • Exacerbating Overcrowding and Safety Issues: Kentucky's prisons are already overcrowded, and this bill will worsen these conditions, posing risks to both staff and incarcerated individuals.

We urge you to consider these points and veto the "Safer Kentucky Act." Instead, we encourage a focus on reforms that truly enhance public safety, respect constitutional rights, and use state resources effectively.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
