End Inhumane Climate Conditions in Prisons!

Over the past two decades, 12,800 incarcerated individuals have perished behind bars during the blazing heat of America’s summer months. It’s easy to see why, prison cells can turn into hotboxes leaving those behind bars to endure the most extreme heat, without means to escape it.  If we saw these same statistics about dogs left in hot cars, the country would be outraged. Yet, no one seems to bat an eye at the suffering of our incarcerated population. Sign to demand climate control measures in prison now.

Climate change has made extreme temperatures the new normal, severely impacting all of us. Among the hardest hit are those individuals behind bars. Many prison facilities in the US lack the necessary climate control to combat the multiple dangerous heat waves our country experiences each year which, turn these complexes into literal hotboxes.

Something must be done, and thankfully there is a game-changing opportunity we can seize upon to address this injustice. Billions in federal funds have been released, designated for clean energy projects in communities most affected by poverty and pollution. And who is more marginalized within the green movement than our justice-impacted population?

Let's advocate for allocating some of these funds to introduce air conditioning and other climate control measures to prisons and jails nationwide. This would not only safeguard the well-being of those serving their sentences but could also enable them to acquire the skills to install these systems to help secure meaningful, high-paying jobs upon reentry into society.

Help to end this suffering. Join us in advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves by urging them to fund the essential climate control measures needed to ensure safe and livable conditions for our incarcerated population.

To the Grant Awardees of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF):

We reach out to you with a critical and urgent plea to address the harrowing conditions faced by incarcerated individuals across the United States. As you are aware, the GGRF is designed to foster community infrastructure projects that promote clean technology and reduce emissions. We propose that a portion of your funding be directed toward the installation of air conditioning systems in prisons and jails, prioritizing those in states notorious for their extreme heat.

The summer months are particularly lethal, turning these facilities into hotboxes where temperatures soar, leading to increased mortality, health crises, and heightened violence. Investing in cooling systems not only aligns with the GGRF’s objectives to accelerate clean technology for disadvantaged communities but also upholds our moral responsibility to ensure humane conditions for all individuals.

We urge you to collaborate with state and local corrections agencies to initiate public-private partnerships that can deliver cost-effective, energy-efficient cooling solutions. Additionally, incorporating solar panels and other green technologies can offset energy costs and emissions associated with upgrading older buildings. Lastly, promote green workforce development programs within the correctional facilities to install these projects, helping people secure meaningful, high-paying jobs when they reenter society.

This initiative not only promises to enhance the lives of nearly two million incarcerated men and women but also supports broader justice reform efforts by alleviating unnecessary suffering. Your commitment can drive meaningful change, demonstrating that societal and environmental welfare can go hand in hand.

Thank you for considering this vital initiative. We look forward to seeing transformative projects that align with our shared values of justice, humanity, and sustainability.
