Its Time for Dignity for Incarcerated Women!

Dignity isn’t a privilege, it’s a right — even, and especially, in prison. Yet in prisons across the country, pregnant women are still forced to endure inhumane treatment like  solitary confinement and being shackled during childbirth.

Everyone acknowledges that we need to change the inhumane, unequal, and unjust policies around how incarcerated women and incarcerated pregnant women in Wisconsin are treated. Now we have a real chance to do so, taking a positive step toward restoring humanity and dignity to women behind bars in WI.

Tell your Wisconsin Representatives to take a positive step toward restoring humanity and dignity to women behind bars in WI by supporting  Dignity for Incarcerated Women!

    Dear Representative,

    In Wisconsin, since 1980, the number of women in prison has increased by 897%. Despite that increase in population, prisons are not required to provide access to appropriate health care, meaning pregnant incarcerated people face conditions like shackling and solitary confinement that are harmful to themselves and their babies. This is why I urge you to pass the Dignity for Incarcerated Women bill.

    The Dignity for Incarcerated Women Bill will help prioritize health by:

    • Limiting the use of restraints during pregnancy and birth;
    • Restricting placing pregnant people in solitary confinement;
    • Guarantee access to pregnancy and STI tests;
    • Providing educational materials and resources related to pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and parenting;
    • Allowing for free access to doula and mental health services, including for postpartum depression;
    • Providing access to breastmilk pumping for up to 12 months after birth;
    • Access to hygiene products during menstruation, and lactation. Before, during and post pregnancy.
