The Arizona Department of Corrections Needs Independent Oversight

Senate Bill (SB) 1507 would establish a new agency that would provide independent oversight of the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry (ADCRR), ensuring accountability when it comes to those who are incarcerated’s health as well as the safety of both prisoners and staff, and would investigate complaints within the state’s correctional facilities.

Everything from food, to security, to medical, and beyond would be monitored, not by the Department themselves, but by a new agency that will hold them accountable and report directly to the Governor. This is desperately needed.

Arizona prisons have a new director, and there is hope that good changes are to come, but there is still more to be done. Creating an independent agency to oversee our state’s prisons is the best way to ensure those incarcerated are being treated with dignity.

Take action now, tell the Arizona House to pass SB1507 and bring real accountability to Arizona prisons.

Dear Distinguished Member of the Arizona Legislature,

I am writing to urge you to vote YES on SB1507.

This bill will put into place an independent oversight office that will take on the responsibility of holding the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry accountable for the people in their charge and their $1.3 billion dollar budget.

    This legislation would:

    • enhance department transparency
    • improve facilities
    • eliminate duplicative reporting requirements
    • create better correctional outcomes
    • bring long-term cost savings to the state by identifying issues before they become widespread or result in lawsuits

With the new Prison Director, we have seen the seeds of real progress, but there is more to be done. That’s why I am asking you to please vote YES on SB1507.

    Thank you.
